REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt. S# 4826. Bbl. shortened to 5 1/2" with standard blade sight. 6-shot fluted cyl. Blue and case colored finish. Left side of frame is stamped "U.S.". Trigger guard and back strap have non-matching S# "134089" above "K" inspector mark. Bbl. and cyl. are unnumbered, indicating replacement at the time of arsenal rebuild. Bottom of bbl. has "R.A.C." inspector initials over "P" proof mark. 1-piece walnut grip. Right panel "RAC" (Rinaldo A. Carr). Left panel has hand carved initials that may be "ETF". During 1893 most cavalry revolvers used during the Indian Wars were recalled by the Ordnance Department and placed into storage. During 1898, at the beginning of the Spanish-American War these revolvers were returned to Springfield Armory to be refurbished, where they were converted to Artillery configuration with bbls. shortened to 5 1/2". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: John A. Kopec letter stating this this revolver originated within Lot 5, which was one of the prime lots from which the 7th Cavalry revolvers were drawn just prior to their departure into the black hills. Kopec further states "There is very little doubt that our subject revolver's frame could have also originated from a Seventh Cavalry issued revolver". CONDITION: bbl., cyl., and grip straps retain approx. 30% blue fading to gray and showing scattered light corrosion. Frame and hammer retain faint traces of case colors fading to gray showing scattered spots of pitting and corrosion. Grips have age darkened worn appearance with lightly visible markings having chips at toe. Sound action. Bore retains largely intact rifling showing scattered pitting. (01-28134/DS).
