Cal. 45 Colt. S# 630. Bbl. arsenal shortened to 5 1/2" with blade sight. Bbl. has Hartford address. Fluted 6 shot cylinder. Left side of frame is stamped "US". Bottom of barrel has "A" inspectors mark. Back of cylinder has "K" inspepctors inittial. Hammer slot has "C" inspectors initial. Frame is serial number 630, cylinder is number 5144. Trigger guard is number 4372. Backstrap is serial number 71252. Later style ejector head. Trigger is intentionally shortened. 1 Piece walnut grips. Bottom of both panels have "RAC" inspectors marks referring to sub inspector Rinaldo A. Carr. Right panel has 1903 date over illegible cartouche. Many of the original 7 1/2" Cavalry models were returned to the arsenal beginning in 1895 for refurbishing. Barrels were shortened to 5 1/2" and they were reassembled with mixed serial numbers. These guns became known to collectors as Artillery Models as many were issued to Artillery units during the Spanish-American War. Mfg. 1874. CONDITION: metal finish has faded to a pleasing mottled brown patina. Grips have age darkened appearance showing heavy wear and handling marks. Bright bore retains strong rifling. Action is in time.
