PROVISIONAL CAVALRY OF MASSACHUSETTS CIRCA 1917. This fine set includes the National Colors, the Massachusetts state flag w/ the 1st Troop Cavalry banner around the state emblem & the troop guidon. The National Colors pole bears a brass presentation shield that reads, “Presented to, First Troop, Provisional Cavalry, Massachusetts, By, Albert Guy Keith, 1917.” All of the poles are approx. 112". The guidon measures approx. 27" x 42". The pole is complete w/ the leather wrist strap for the rider to use when mounted. The National Colors & the Massachusetts state flag are approx. 36" x 48". The National Colors & the guidon poles are made & marked, “Made by, The Boston Regalia Company, Boston, Mass.” The pole of the state flag is of different manufacture. This particular unit was shorted lived. In 1916, Troop A, the National Lancers was federalized & sent to the Mexican border chasing down the revolutionary Poncho Villa. Shortly after their return to the state, war was declared by President Wilson & the troop was once again federalized, & unfortunately for the Lancers, they were dismounted & ordered to fight as infantry. They were designated as part of the 102nd Machine Gun Battalion of the 26th (Yankee) Division. CONDITION: all of these flags are in need of restoration & show varying degrees of degradation to the silk. The guidon is in the best condition of the 3 flag showing 3 round stains on the white silk & sm. scattered stress tears. The state flag has sm. tears in the silk around the central painted emblem. The gold fringe is solidly intact. The National Colors show sm. stress tears throughout. The pole finial is missing. There are no tassels on the National Colors. (02-15628/BF). $600-1,000.
