BLOCK RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. NSN. The US Navy in 1870 ordered 10,000 rifles to augment their carbines. This rifle lacks inspector cartouches on left side of frame indicating it was never accepted by the Navy. As said in "Remington Rolling Block Military Rifles of the World", many of these rifles were "condemned" as Springfield "discovered" that the rear sight on the barrel was 1/2" in front of action instead of 3 1/8". Approx. 10,000 of these "condemned" rifles were sold to Poultney & Trimble of Baltimore, then sold to the French Government during the Franco-Prussian war; Remington were the buyer agent for French government & was tasked with purchasing any surplus rifle it can get as was this case coordinating with P&T. This rifle has a barrel of 32 5/8" with bayonet lug on bottom, barleycorn front sight & 2 leaf ladder rear sight. Remington's patent rolling block action with "USN / SPRINGFIELD / 1870" marking over American Eagle. Walnut 2 barrel band forearm & walnut buttstock with "US" marked buttplate. Modern brown leather sling. CONDITION: metal has a brown/gray patina appearance with deep marks on top of chamber, vice marks on sides of barrel, scattered marks & light pitting. Fair worn forearm with marks, couple of cracks & wood fill repair at bottom. Sanded & refinished buttstock shows wood chips around top tang, loose fit to action, along with handling marks. Bore shows strong rifling & pitting. Hammer can be pushed off full cock position. Ramrod shows heavy oxidation throughout. (01-26215/MD). ANTIQUE. $700-1,100.
