BROTHER NEW ORLEANS SABER BAYONET. Cal. 54. NSN. In 1860 Watervliet arsenal in New York shipped 10,000 Model 1841 Mississippi rifles to five southern federal armories, 6000 of these were Robbins & Lawrence. Prior to 1860, 9300 Mississippi rifles had already been issued to the nine states which would form the Confederacy. Howard Madaus & John Murphy show many different alterations. This alteration possibly by Cook & Brother in New Orleans utilizes a soldered bayonet lug on right side of barrel that attaches the unserialized Cook & Brother saber bayonet. Cook & Brother made rifles that had matching serial numbers on fitted bayonets. Other than the Confederate saber bayonet alteration, this is a standard configuration Model 1841 Mississippi rifle made by Robbins & Lawrence in 1848, “US” surcharge with two inspection cartouches as would be expected coming from a Southern federal armory. CONDITION: good to very good overall, appears complete and matching with exception of missing front sling swivel. Barrel and lock have overall dark plum patina, with pitting & several gashes at breech. The accompanying Cook & Brother’s 22" yatagan blade is hard metal plated, Brass has light to medium mustard patina, locking spring functional, fits muzzle and lug with slight looseness. Action is functional with well defined 7 groove dark rifling. PROVENANCE: Dr. Fred Novy collection. (01-23112/JS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-5,000.
