BREECH LOADING SADDLE RING CARBINE. Cal. 52 RF. SN 2829. Standard configuration, 22" barrel, 3 position adjustable rear sight, hinged pivoting breech, "JOSLYN ARMS CO / STONINGTON, CONN" marked on lock forward of hammer, "B F JOSLYN'S PATENT / OCTOBER 8TH 1861 / JUNE 24TH 1862" on top of 1st type pivoting breech. Stamped on bottom of stock forward of triggerguard is "Z" which designates Confederate armory "Cleaned & Repaired" and is one of tens of thousands of long arms captured by Lee's army in Overland campaign of 1864 when Grant approached Richmond and lost so many men & arms while beating Virginia into submission. This is 2nd 1st model Joslyn documented recently with same "Z" mark which author Steve Knott attributes to Capt. Louis Zimmer of Richmond Armory. "CAPTURED AND COLLECTED-Confederate Reissued Firearms" 2019. The other captured Joslyn (S# 585) was attributed to 19th NY cavalry. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of Captain Knott's C&R 2019 text showing identical markings and attributions. CONDITION: very good overall, complete and original, barrel retains traces of original blue with balance a mottled plum/brown patina. Lock & hammer retain strong areas of muted case colors. Stock is sound with 2 bright inspector cartouches, scattered dints and dings consistent with field use. Brass furniture has toned patina after old polish. Mechanically fine with bright crisp rifled bore. (01-26984/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
