DATED COLT RIFLE MUSKET. Cal. .58. S# NSN. Bbl. 40". Standard configuration of special contract rifle musket among the thousands captured during Lee’s Overland campaign. Steve Knott brings to light in depth research in his text "Captured & Collected" Confederate Reissued Firearms". These long arms for many years were always a curiosity with the various stamped letters on bottom of stocks of many Union and Confederate long arms. We now understand that various Confederate armories repurposed the many thousands of arms captured. Several letter stamps are found that designate these reissued arms. The "Z" stamped forward of trigger guard is one of the two most common letters found and refers to Virginia armory. Many of these reissued guns have mixed parts, from several guns to make one functional gun, many were just rusted on the battlefield when found & only needed cleaning & polishing. In the case of this musket, the stock appears replaced and has no US inspection or manufacturing proofs, only the final "Z" CS inspection. The barrel is dated 1863 and appears of different manufacturer, "W.P." inspection on left mostly polished out, on bottom is "P" & "G.B.F." inspection. Bolster was filed on bottom front edge to fit. Lock has been made functional with several replaced parts along with original Colt proofed parts. Hammer has been polished losing all but outline of Colt factory inspection initial. Front band has also had "U" almost entirely polished out which is common to see on "C&R" muskets. CONDITION: very good overall, "Z' crisp and well defined. Mechanically fine with crisp good rifled bore. (01-22947/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
