Interesting variant Confederate cavalry saber, no doubt made by Louis Froelich of Wilmington & later Kenansville, NC. This saber exhibits heavier than normally encountered classic Froelich pointed quillon w/ 1860 style pommel instead of normally encountered straight sided pommel characteristic of this maker. Sword appears original & unaltered w/ matching assembly mark “XXIII” cut into edge of hilt & throat of classic Froelich brass mounted lap seamed scabbard. CONDITION: good to very good overall, w/ contemporary copper wire repair at base of grip. Grip retains over 1/2 its original leather w/ chipping & wear at high areas. Blade point has been reshaped & measures 34 1/4" & overall gray. Brass hilt & scabbard mounts have matching dark mustard patina. Scabbard body sound w/ iron patina. (02-16203/JS). $2,000-4,000.
