The maker of this rare & unusual Confederate cutlass is unknown, but at least 1 other is known of similar configuration. Measures 25” overall w/ a 20 3/4” blade, 1 1/8” & 1/4” thick. Cutlass is retained in a brass mounted scabbard originally made for saber bayonet. Sword & scabbard fit fairly well. A canvas belt is attached to the scabbard throat & no doubt appears original to its time of use. Knotting is reminiscent of repairs done by sailors which further substantiates potential use as a Naval cutlass. CONDITION: very good overall, single fullered blade has overall dark gray mottled patina w/ old sharpening, solid cast grasp concentric ring grip & D-guard have some play due to loss of protective washer, mixed olive/chocolate patina, scabbard is sound retaining much of its original black surface w/ scuffing, scabbard mts. have mixed olive/mustard patinas. (02-13584/JS). $3,000-4,000.
