Kepi has a letter & photographs compiled by Les Jensen, Civil War textile authority. Jensen describes kepi measuring 4 1/2” in front & 7” in back including roll, 5 1/4" diameter top. All hand sewn body made from cotton warp & wool weft. Top of crown is lined w/ black painted cotton or linen. Lining is tabby weave cotton. Chinstrap is made from black painted cotton w/ 2 sm. loops & sm. stippled antebellum brass buttons w/ tin backs attaching to body. “The construction is generally consistent w/ other known Civil War kepis. Kepi appears to be hand sewn in all major seams, both in the cap & lining, except for the machine stitching on the visor. This is consistent w/ known practice. The higher proportions of the cap argue for a Civil War date. The basic color combination & overall look appears Confederate.” UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Les Jensen report of authenticity. CONDITION: very good overall, cloth is supple, has sm. areas of mothing, lining has minor fraying, sweatband & chin strap are complete & sound. (02-13606/JS). $6,000-8,000.
