ARSENAL OR POSSIBLY J.C. WILSON OF HOUSTON, TEXAS. Overall length: 37". Blade length: 30 3/4". This sword is likely a product of the College Hill Arsenal but very similar swords were also made by J.C. Wilson of Texas. The College Hill Arsenal was operated by L.T. Cunningham of Nashville, TN. In 1861, Cunningham organized an arsenal on College Hill in Nashville. Little is known about the J.C. Wilson operation in Houston, TX but research is uncovering more information every year. This example has a plain blade w/ a single, lg. unstopped fuller. The hilt is a plain divided 2 branch guard joining into the knuckle bow. The knuckle bow enters the plain, unadorned pommel 1" under the peen. Wire wrapped leather grip has been professionally restored & matches the sword well. Brass mounted leather scabbard is a quality reproduction signed "JTL" on the drag. CONDITION: blade has a light gray overall patina. Hilt has a deep, mellow mustard patina. Grip is 100%. Scabbard remains solid. (02-17529/BF). $3,000-4,500.
