CAPTAIN CUTHBERT H. SLOCOMB OF THE WASHINGTON ARTILLERY. A fine crimson Confederate officer’s sash of silk or possibly cotton net fabric in a tabby weave. The sash was worn on the uniforms of Captain C.H. Slocomb serving with the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, Louisiana. The belt of the sash measures 3 1/4" wide and 94” long. At each end, is a ball and tassel measuring 7 5/8". The overall length of the entire sash is 109 1/4". The sash uses construction techniques indicative of Civil War period sashes. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Les Jensen authentication letter. CONDITION: the sash remains exceptionally solid with light fading to the tassels and the tassel wraps. There are a few minor stains and pulls in the material that do not detract from the appearance of this fine historic sash. PROVENANCE: Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, Chicago, IL, to legendary collector George Markham in 1957 to the esteemed collection of Don and Judy Polifka in 1987. (02-13430/BF). $1,800-3,600.
