36" blade with characteristic short ricasso with the correct original stamp "Columbia S.C". William Glaze had contract with the state of South Carolina for cavalry sabers in the early 1850s and this is one of the swords he supplied. This is an early stamped example with among the most complete marks you will find. The die broke down and a vast majority are missing portions of almost every letter in die. The sword is correct S&K type 1 model 1840 heavy cavalry saber observed on every original survivor. Most of the sabers saw service in the South Carolina cavalry during the war. Many examples have initials or names scratched on top of guard in at least one unit. This has nicely cross-hatched "JW" on edge of guard. CONDITION: good overall, blade is better than average, cleaned gray surface, grip is professionally rewrapped. Hilt cleaned and stained toned patina. The correct one pin throat scabbard is dark and pitted, fits well. PROVENANCE: purchased from Brian Akins. (02-24324/JS). NON-GUN. $2,000-3,000.
