"MISSISSIPPI" RIFLE. Cal. 54. NSN. A note found in the patchbox of this Mississippi rifle states the following: “Confederate rifle relic of the Civil War left by a soldier at the old Academy in Hagerstown, Maryland when part of General Early’s command was encamped on the grounds and brought on by Lorenzo P. Blood to Pepperell in 1868.”. Bbl. 33” with brass semicircular front sight and fixed V notch rear sight. Right side has attached bayonet lug. Breech end of rifle has inspector’s initials “JCB”. Lock plate is marked “Robbins, Kendall & Lawrence/U.S.” in front of hammer with “Windsor, VT/1848” behind hammer. Two band fastened walnut stock. Brass fittings include buttplate, patchbox, trigger guard, side plate and bbl. bands. Brass tipped iron ramrod. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: saber bayonet with 25 3/8” blade dated 1862. Brass ricasso and handle numbered 9215. Brass tipped leather scabbard shows heavy wear with missing upper portions. Blade is cleaned bright showing light pitting. Brass parts have intermittent red toned patina. Note found in patchbox described above. CONDITION: bbl. shows areas of blue with balance fading to a light gray brown. Lock retains lightly faded original blue. Brass parts are cleaned bright. Refinished stock shows dents and marks with an added wood repair on right side at toe. Lightly pitted bore retains sound rifling. (01-23139/DS). ANTIQUE. $1,750-2,500.
