CAVALRY SABER. This is a superior example of 1850s South Carolina state contract. This example has distinct characteristics of S&K type 1 sabers that William Glaze purchased for his Palmetto Armory. 36” Blade stamped “Columbia SC” on ricasso is only marking found on this contract. Fakers try to copy this mark but never get the unique broken dies correct. These early S&K sabers are scarce regardless w/ short ricasso. S&K manufactured scabbard had pinned throat & many Palmettos are found w/ those, but not all, Ames & other American scabbards w/ out pinned throats are commonly found on “out of the woods” examples like this one. Grips on these swords are cord wrapped wood w/ leather & wire wrap. A vast majority have poor damaged grips. This example is complete & tight. CONDITION: very good overall. Blade is gray w/ staining. Marking very good w/ tool mark partially covering 2 letters. Brass hilt toned to light mustard patina, once cleaned. Scabbard overall iron patina w/ scattered small dents unaffecting aesthetic, well fit. Grip is very good w/ chipping to leather. Grip has been coated w/ varnish for preservation. PROVNENANCE: Dr. Fred Novy Collection. (02-16317/JS). $3,000-4,000.
