CAVALRY SABER. Variant 1840 style cavalry saber with rounded guard and stepped disc pommel cap, 34” rounded top edge blade. Louis Froelich’s “Confederate States Armory” in Kenansville, North Carolina hilts varied but scabbard construction always were unique solder filled lap seamed, pinned brass throat, friction fit brass sword rings, squared tip, iron drag, dark red lacquered. This exact word is pictured on page 139 (plates 184 & 184A) of “American Swords & Makers’ Marks” 1999 by C. D. Furr. CONDITION: very good overall, blade is gray/bright, scattered staining and light pitting. Scabbard is equally very good though most red lacquer has chipped off showing tinned sheet iron surface. Matching brass patinas to scabbard mounts, hilt & pommel. Ring mounts loose. Grip retains most all of its original scuffed leather and brass wire wrap. (02-19136/JS). $3,000-4,000.
