CARRIED BY WILLIAM T. WORKS, 4TH ALABAMA INFANTRY. Very attractive cedar wood canteen w/ well patinaed surface & scarce variant w/ brass bands & sling hooks. Not sure why "MISSISSIPPI" is carved, as the 2 soldiers named on the canteen were both in Company C, 4th Alabama infantry. William Taylor Works (1834-1898) mustered into 4th Alabama, Co. C, April 26, 1861 & was present at Appomattox April 9, 1865. “WTW” initials are carved 4 times on canteen & full name “Wm. T. Works” once. Another name “W C Stokes” is also carved on canteen & William C Stokes entered service in Co. C 4th Alabama on April 26, 1861 & was captured at Chickamauga September 19, 1863. It makes sense to think maybe this was originally Stokes canteen & camp mate continued to use after his capture. CONDITION: very good overall, brass bands & sling hooks have untouched mustard/olive patina. Turned wood spout has paper shim, fit w/ turned wood & cork plug. Fragment of accompanying leather sling is poor and broken. (02-14835/JS). $3,000-4,000.
