Flag de-accessed from Confederate Museum of Charleston. This is a banner that has lost its historical association w/ museum & being sold for benefit of flag conservation project ongoing last few years. Banner measures 28” x 23” purple silk painted lettering on both sides, fringed at bottom. The CSMA was founded 1900 to consolidate all southern state Confederate memorial associations, many which had started at end of war. Many prominent women of the south were involved & they participated in United Confederate Veteran events through the early 20th century, being responsible for many of the Confederate monuments that so much controversy is in the news today. A 300 page “History of the Confederated Southern Memorial Associations of the South” was published in 1903, illustrated w/ Confederate monuments & their history (not included w/ lot). The organization was founded to be “strictly memorial & historical” as stated in this book. CONDITION: painted portion is very good, silk is weak & heavily frayed at top. (02-16601/JS). $1,500-2,500.
