RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 1051. Bbl. 32" octagon (12") to slightly tapered (1.110" to 1.008") round (20") with Lyman #17 globe front sight; Soule style (unknown maker) long range rear sight (very similar to MVA #100) on tang. Octagon section is drilled and tapped (plug screws present) at proper 7.2" spacing for target blocks. Bottom of barrel is marked "Badger" along with "1-18" (twist rate), "5R" (type of rifling) and "5-16-05" (date). Improved version of Stevens Model 44-1/2 by Paul Shuttleworth (1929-2022) using investment cast 8620 steel and modern CAD machining methods starting in 1986. Walls of action are slightly thicker than the Stevens for more strength. Fitted with double set triggers plus ball and spur lever without wood inserts. Besides the quality appearance and smoothness of its action, the hammer has lightening machining on its sides for reduced lock time. Action and lever are superbly case colored and very vivid. Satin blued barrel with polished in the white muzzle to show grease streaks. Finely fitted, gloss finished, uncheckered stock set with slight schnable on forend plus pistol grip buttstock having straight comb, S shaped bottom of pistol grip, raised RH cheekpiece and Stevens marked checkered black plastic buttplate; all with great figure in the wood. Channel of forend has action serial number and "4P". A wonderful classic in a very good caliber that is sanctioned for shooting NRA Silhouette matches. CONDITION: the finish of the stock set has some very slight spots of checking that will very likely come back to life with extremely fine wet sanding and additional hand rubbed finish. Repaired hairline crack on forend from rear screw to action. Metal finish and bore are near excellent. (25-5612/NW). MODERN. $1,750-2,500.
