CARBINE IN FINE UNALTERED CONDITION. Cal. 45-70. S# 16543. Standard configuration w/ 22” bbl. w/ tangent & ladder sight dated Model 1873 on breech block & on lock under “U. S. SPRINGFIELD” & eagle. American walnut stock has buttplate w/out trap, flush outline at rear of bbl. & short comb. Inspectors mark on left at rear of saddle ring bar illegible. Checkering on hammer is not bordered in early style. CONDITION: good to very good, "as found". Metal has a considerable amount of all original finishes in protected areas, the balance is nicely hand worn to silver over pinprick pitting. Stock w/ most of its original finish has a considerable amount of rubs & marks, some quite deep. The left side of butt is deeply marked & rubbed from contact w/ saddle, brush, etc. This has also caused inspectors initials to be obliterated. There is a slight crack on left side of forend in front of bbl. band running up to bbl. channel, otherwise stock is sound. Bore is fine, shiny, strong rifling & a few scattered light pits. Breech block is tight. There is a bit of play in locking cam, 2 click lock is fine. This is a really fine, honest example of this desirable western carbine. (01-17508/MGM124). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
