LEVER ACTION PISTOL. Cal. 41. S# 1523. Pistol is in standard configuration with blued 8" octagonal barrel, integral spring loaded magazine, fixed notch rear sight, pinched post front sight, engraved brass frame, varnished walnut grips. Made to shoot self-contained "rocket ball" cartridges with powder & primer contained in conical ball. Manufactured between 1855-1857 after formation of Volcanic Arms Company from Smith & Wesson after they sold their interests to investors including Oliver Winchester. Barrel markings: "THE VOLCANIC ARMS CO. / NEW HAVEN CONN / PATENT FEB 14 1854" on top flat. CONDITION: fine as refinished, barrel retains about half of its thinning reblued finish, missing rotating flange screw, address marking very good as freshened, frame has stained brass patina over custom scroll engraving applied after manufacture, replacement wood grips fit well with bulbous swell at edges. Mechanics need attention, well not hold cock, pitted rifled bore. (01-26761/JS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
