Cal. 30-06. S# 1417362 (scope base removed to verify). Roy Gradle was a well respected riflesmith in Santa Barbara, CA in the '60's. He is known for his use of fancy walnut, his California styling and exceptionally fine inletting. This rifle has 24" medium weight barrel with sleeved on front sight ramp. Top of barrel is marked "ROY GRADLE" and caliber is at left rear. Springfield action has had rear tang reshaped and a Redfield one piece scope base fitted. Bolt has turndown handle with two panel checkered knob along with engine turned body and low scope safety. A commercial trigger is fitted. Standard bottom metal has had trigger guard thinned and bow is engraved with monogram "JMU". Stock of fiddle figured and nicely colored claro walnut has roll over comb coupled with Monte Carlo and swept right hand cheekpiece. Cleanly checkered grip flares and ends in large ebony grip cap. Matching checkering is around semi-beaver tail forend. Stock measures 13-5/8" over Roy Gradle marked recoil pad. Rifle is fitted with Bausch & Lomb Balvar 88 scope with tapered post reticle in steel Redfield rings. CONDITION: very fine retaining nearly all custom finishes on wood and metal with some scattered handling marks. Bore is bright, sharp and shiny. Mechanically good. Scope has some minor scratches; optically clear. (24-2593/MGM). CURIO. $1,800-2,500.
