Cal. 10 Ga. 2-7/8". S# 1001. David Kirkwood apprenticed as an action filer for Mortimer's in England. He emigrated to America and made completely hand built guns in Boston until his death in 1896. He held many patents; one of which was for this boxlock type gun which was offered in three grades. This gun appears to be a middle grade and has "D. KIRKWOOD. BOSTON" engraved on rectangular gold inlaid device on flat game rib of 28" damascus barrels. Barrel flats and bottoms of barrels are unmarked. Bottom of loop is stamped "Pat Nov. 27, 88". Case hardened top lever boxlock action with automatic safety has sliding third fastener which engages square shouldered dolls head rib extension. Firing pins act as cocking indicators, visable in slots cut into top cheeks of stocks. As an action filer David liked to show off his talents and the fences on these guns are quite dramatically carved in a unique style only found on his boxlock guns. Action is engraved with 80% coverage well cut scroll. "D KIRKWOOD" is in scroll terminated ribbon on each side of action. Scroll engraved trigger guard has S# on tang. It is thought that David began numbering his guns around 1882 with 900. Round knob pistol grip buttstock of stump figured European walnut measures 15" over old Ranger open sided pad. Stock is well shaped with distinctive fluted comb, drop points and well cut checkering thought to have been done by his daughter. A gold shield on toeline is engraved with a monogram "JEB" (?). Matching splinter forend with filed hard rubber tip is near fully checkered and has spring tension release. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .782. R .777. Restriction: L .020 (mod). R .001 (cyl). Wall thickness: L .030. R .030. STOCK: DAH: 3-1/2. DAC: 2". CAST: neutral. LOP: 15". WEIGHT: 7 lb. 11 oz. CONDITION: very good to fine. Barrels retaining most of their light colored brown which is typical of Kirkwood guns. Action retains about 30% case hardening color. Stocks retain most of what is probably their original varnish finish with some added oil over a fair number of marks, dings and scratches. Poorly fitted recoil pad is obviously a later addition. Bores are shiny with some scattered pitting mostly in right barrel. Action is tight. Mechanically good. A scarce American handmade gun. (01-26974/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
