BRONZE FIGURAL MANTLE CLOCK. Circa 1885, France. Manufactured by Deniere et Fils (French, 1804-1903). The firm was an important producer of clocks and metal works such as bronzes done in their foundry. Napoleon III commissioned several works for the Palais Royale during his reign. The ornate figural bronze case in three parts. The upper section features two central figures of Muses; likely an image of Euterpe, goddess of music and Kaliope; goddess of poetry. They are dressed in flowing robes and each wearing a wreath. Kaliope depicted holding a large bound book standing beside a plaque of Lully, a french composer and a plaque with a bust portrait of an unknown gentleman with the name "Hnaulf". A Putto stands beside the figure of Euterpe offering wreaths to an unseen observer from a small pedestal. The oval clock base is cast with intricate "S" and "C" three dimensional scroll work and floral vinery centering the clock with enameled dial. The dial is inscribed with a Roman numeral chapter ring marking the hours and an Arabic numeral ring inscribed with 5-minute marks. Dial is further inscribed "Deniere / Ft de Bronzes / A Paris" and retains original filigree hour and minute hands of delicate form. The movement is additionally marked on the backplate "BR" / Deniere A Paris / 1876" also stamped "A. BLACHER" and "Medaille d'or / Paris / 1827". The keywind single train movement striking on a bell; needs cleaning and adjustment. Clock is accompanied by its key and pendulum. SIZE: 26 1/2" h x 29 1/2" w x 12" d. CONDITION: case is in very fine original and untouched condition with no damage or repairs. The movement is wound but does not appear to function. Movement must be reset to balance and needs cleaning. Dial and hands are original and in very good condition. PROVENANCE: Private Southern New England Collection. (05-1038/TG). $2,000-3,000.
