1890 SLIDE ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 22 Short. S# 107969. Bbl. 24". Model 1890 slide action rifle mfg. by Winchester in 1901. The top flat of the octagonal bbl. is marked with Winchester's 2-line address, with "22 SHORT" marked towards the breech. Upper receiver tang is marked "WINCHESTER/ -1890-" above patent information, with the S# marked on the lower tang. Receiver assembly, hammer, and buttplate exhibit a case color hardened finish (standard until 1901), with remaining metal components including the bbl., mag. tube, and bolt exhibiting a blue finish. Receiver shows areas of what appears to be period applied varnish. Mortise breechblock. Plain wood straight grip stock with grooved wood pump. Dovetailed blade front sight with screwed in V-notch rear sight terminating in a circular aperture. CONDITION: receiver assembly and hammer retain fair amounts of their original case color hardened finish, showing areas of fading and wear showing through to gray and brown patinas, with areas of light pitting present overall, particularly on the right side. Frame retains vibrant case coloring in areas with remaining varnish. Buttplate retains faint case coloring, with the balance fading to gray patina and showing spots of dark surface oxidation. Bbl. and mag. tube retain large amounts to the majority of their original blue finish, showing mild edge wear, with scattered spots of light surface oxidation. Bore exhibits scattered patches of dark moderate pitting, while retaining good rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Wood furniture shows scattered marks and minor impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Norm Greenberg Collection. (25-4215/MLW). CURIO. $1,000-1,500.
