SHOT PISTOL WITH BOX. Cal. 45 ACP. NSN. Bbl. 4 1/8". The FP-45 (clandestine designation "Flare Pistol") Liberator pistol was proposed, developed, and began mass production at the U.S. Guide Lamp Division of General Motors in only 11 weeks, with the Joint Psychological Warfare Committee intending on air dropping loads of Liberator pistols to resistance and partisan groups in German occupation countries during World War II. The Liberator was never designed to be used for more than just a few shots, with its main purpose serving as a rudimentary, easily concealable, and cost effective pistol for resistance fighters to use against enemy personnel in order to secure more effective small arms. The frame, constructed of stamped sheet metal, features a removable plate on the butt for storage of additional ammunition. Bbl. is milled and breechblock is cast. Loading of the smoothbore bbl. is achieved via the rotation of the breechblock and raising of the rear sight, with ejection involving the simple inclusion of a wood dowel rod to ram the fired casing out through the breech. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: reproduction wood box containing wax paper packaging. CONDITION: pistol retains a relatively bright appearance, having dulled slightly and showing scattered spots of age related discoloration overall. Breechblock exhibits surface level cracking overall. Bore is bright, showing no evidence of prior use. Proper manual mechanics. Reproduction box is very good. An attractive example of a Liberator pistol, whose design philosophy would go on the influence the CIA "Deer Gun" during the Vietnam War. (25-4311/MLW). CURIO. $1,000-1,500.
