SNIPER RIFLE. Cal.30-06. S# 3867045. Bbl. 24". These rifles were developed by John C. Garand in 1943-44 to provide a better scope mounting system than the M-1C sniper rifles which would prevent a loss of zero when the telescopic sight was removed and replaced. The M-1D came into its own during the Korean war with a total of app. 21,000 produced at Springfield Armory and an unknown number also produced at other arsenals and base depots. These rifles were mostly equipped with M-84 scopes as in this example. The receiver is marked on the right front leg with "T E 6-69" indicating an overhaul at Toole Army Depot in June of that year. The barrel marked "SA" has the correct number "D7312555" and the date "3-53". Throat and muzzle gauge 1.0. All visible parts markings are "SA". T105-E1 aperture rear sight. Blade front sight with protective ears. Stamped triggerguard. Rifle fitted with correct base at rear of barrel. Alignment pin staked evenly in four places. Rear handguard made shorter to accommodate the scope base. The scope bracket has a 50 click knob and correct spacing of hinge components. The Allen head screws have 5/64" sockets. M-84 telescopic sight with an untapered post and crosshair reticule. Plate on right side of turret base is marked "TELESCOPE/M84/ SERIAL NO. 38106. Turrets are equipped with hinged covers. Ocular lens has rubber eye piece. Objective lens has sliding steel sun shade. Blued steel tube has number "7667424" on the right forward end. Walnut buttstock is marked only with an encircled "P" and plain "P" proofs. Leather lace on cheek piece marked "MRT 3-59". Vietnam era green web sling. Rear handguard is walnut replacement. Front handguard is hardwood. UNNATTACHED ACCESSORIES; cone type M-2 Flash hider. Cleaning kit in butt. CONDITION: stock set has an arsenal rework finish with very light wear and a good appearance. There is a small area by the left rear of the receiver with a light colored stain. The metal retains nearly all of its arsenal rework gray parkerized finish with very light wear. Markings on receiver enhanced in white. Scope retains a very large degree of original blue finish. Rubber eye piece has 1/4" tear in lower left edge. Optics are clear and serviceable.
