The 50mm Type 89 mortar is one of the most famous Japanese weapons of World War Two. Nicknamed the "Knee Mortar" by American troops who thought the weapon could be fired when braced against one's knee. However firing in this manner would result in a severe bruise or broken thigh due to the weapon's heavy recoil. The rifled Type 89 replaced the earlier Type 10 model which was a smoothbore. This example is serial number 50418, it has a matching base plate & elevation lever. The other parts are mismatched. This example has also been demilled by adding a large hole & cross bar in the tube so as to make it legal to BATF specs. CONDITION: metal retains most of it's original blue finish w/ scattered oxidation & some fine pitting. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18417/MJC). $500-700.
