C JARVIS. This oil on board portrait of the eminent and heroic surgeon George C. Jarvis measures approx. 38" x 32 1/2" overall with a sight size of 25" x 30". The waist-up portrait of Jarvis depicts him bald with a long beard and mustache. Jarvis was born in 1834 and received his medical degree from New York University early in 1861. In December of 1861 he was commissioned as Assistant Surgeon of the 1st Battalion of Connecticut Cavalry. In October of 1862 he was promoted to Surgeon of the 7th Connecticut Volunteers. He was lauded many times in his military career for bravery and gallantry. He was instrumental in the assault on Fort Gregg and was cited by the Commanding General. He served with distinction at the Battle of Olustee and gave his horse to a wounded man left on the field of battle then marched on foot 30 miles back to camp. He was at Fort Fisher on General Terry's staff and was in charge of hospitals at Fernandina, Florida, St. Augustine, Florida, and Morris Island. A braver or more esteemed military surgeon would be difficult to find. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copies of pages of a book relating the history of Dr. Jarvis. CONDITION: painting shows no notable damage. Frame shows light storage wear overall. (02-24290/BF). $400-600.
