BROOMHANDLE PISTOL. Cal. 7.63mm. S# 04875. Bbl 5 1/2". Unusual Chinese copy of a Wartime Standard Commercial C96 with 5.5" barrel, fixed front sight, tangent rear sight (missing cursor) graduated 2-14. This exact pistol is pictured on page 220 of System Mauser, by Breathed & Schroeder. Long extractor (missing), two lug firing pin, safety as found on the Wartime Standard Commercial Mausers, thin trigger. Top of chamber with three line Mauser reference, one line upside down, several misspellings. Crown/C/U on left chamber flat. Full serial number "04875" on left side of barrel extension and repeated on back of frame and bolt. Bolt stop, missing large fraction, has remaining portion stamped with the number "5". Right side of frame with two line Mauser address, replete with other misspellings. Lanyard ring present. Disassembly shows most small parts matched to the first two digits of the SN, in this case "04", with obvious hand fitting. Follower spring is missing a segment. Grips internally unnumbered though the left panel marked with "04", at the bottom. CONDITION: metal with a blue/gray/brown toning, generously good, as typical for most Chinese pistols that were used hard and put away wet. As mentioned, the extractor and cursor are missing. Dull bore with shallow rifling. Proper manual mechanics. Truly a one of a kind C96, especially nice in having been pictured in the classic text "System Mauser". (22-3173/LA). CURIO. $1,000-2,000.
