SHALLOW MILLED, TARGET MODIFIED, MATCHING STOCK. Cal. 9mm Para. S# 31186. Bbl 5 1/2". This exact pistol is described and pictured on pages 86 and 87 of System Mauser by Breathed Schroeder (book not included). As an early Large Ring Shallow Milled pistol, reported examples in the serial range, 30300-31200, it has a 5.5" barrel and a slip in rear sight graduated from 50-1000. Long extractor, single lug firing pin, large ring hammer, early safety. Three line address on chamber and full serial number on the left chamber flat. Crown/C/U marking on the left side of the barrel extension. Antler proof on right. Imported by VON LENGERKE/ & DETMOLD/ NEW-YORK" on the left side of the frame. The full serial number is repeated on the subframe and frame with the last three digits in the usual locations on all external parts. Disassembly shows a fully matching pistol to include the follower, floorplate, firing pin, transfer bar, sear, and both hard rubber grip panels, each inscribed with the full serial number. Lanyard ring is present. The gun was later customized by inserting a slip in/then pinned ivory bead front sight and an additional screw in blade to the rear sight with exaggerated ears. Rechambering to 9mmP was marked on the left chamber flat "9MM". Accompanied by a factory matching shoulder stock whose body has been recessed to accommodate the ears of the added sight blade, the lid properly notched for the large ring hammer. CONDITION: approximately VG with the pistol retaining about 85% original rust blue, sharp edge wear and thinning in expected areas, particularly the forward base of the magazine well and front/back straps. Comparable condition fire blue, showing no enhancement, with noticeable spotting of the bolt stop. The trigger with most of its original straw. Hard rubber grips with blunted checkering, no splits or external losses, the left panel having an internal loss around the grip screw hole. Mirror bore with sharp rifling. Perfect manual mechanics. G-VG stock with much of its original finish, having several repaired cracks along the spine buttressed by six pins. An additional pin in the lid to repair the usual crack forward of the large ring hammer. Most of the blue remaining on the hinge while the upper arm of the lug has largely faded to gray. An extremely unusual pistol with period modifications, possibly by the retailer, a great bonus to be highlighted in the classic book, System Mauser! (22-3086/LA). CURIO. $4,500-6,500.
