STOCK. Cal. 7.63mm. S# A5528. Bbl. 6 1/8". In the first half of the 20th century China was involved in a near continuous series of battles that defined their civil war. Initially, western powers supplied the majority of their small arms, particularly FN in Belgium and Mauser from Germany. Shortly afterwards, several Spanish companies became involved. Through Broomhandles were clearly a favorite for the warlords, Star-Bonifacio Echeverria realizing it would be too time consuming and expensive to make a C96 copy, decided to revise his 1911 type pistols to a more competitive configuration. He chambered the pistols for the 7.63mm Mauser cartridge, fitted them with an extended bbl., had their slide modified to accommodate a tangent rear sight, and slotted their frame to attach a hollow wood shoulder stock similar in form/concept to the C96. This pistol has a 6 1/8" extended bbl. and has a tangent sight graduated from 50-1000. The left side of the slide is marked with a single line address "AUTOMATIC PISTOL" followed by the Star logo trademark and the caliber. The Pre-Eibar proofing rearing lion is marked behind the slide serrations, on the exposed chamber, and as part of the proofing triad on the left side of the frame. The frame has the same finger cutouts as a 1911A1, while the straight backstrap is slotted to accommodate a shoulder stock, a lanyard ring having been fitted to the bottom of the left frame. Fitted with horn panels having a prominent Star trademark in a central field surrounded by bordered checkering. Button release mag. that has 7-indicator holes and a fixed floorplate, this example marked with the Guardia Civil logo and numbered "20484". "Star Firearms" by Leonardo Antaris shows this pistol to have been exported to Amberes in February of 1928. An identical and closely serialized pistol, termed a Type III Model Carbine, photographed on page 436. MAGS: 1 8-rd. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: complimenting the pistol is an early Star shoulder stock as originally made for the heavier frame Model M/P with a small button latch retainer and lug (#822) sized for a frame with palm swell. CONDITION: the pistol is G-VG retaining 70-80% of the original rust blue with sharp edge wear, toning, and handling-related thinning as one might expect from a pistol that has seen service use in the far east. Comparable condition grips with most wear directed at the right panel, having blunted checkering and a missing laminate of horn at the bottom rear corner. Near mirror bore. Correct manual mechanics. Comparable or slightly better condition shoulder stock with the lug, filed to fit and now in-the-white. The interior of the stock having been carefully drilled to accept the extended bbl. An impressive ensemble with a well documented history that should satisfy any collector interested in shoulder stock pistols. (25-3558/LMA). CURIO. $3,000-5,000.
