CARBINE. Cal. 7.62x54R. S# NY2215. Bbl. 20 1/2". M44 bolt action Carbine manufactured at the Izhevsk arsenal in 1945. The bbl. shank is stamped with the State Emblem of the Soviet Union above the date "1945r", S#, as well as the Izhevsk arsenal insignia. Right side of buttstock is impressed with "CCCP" in a circle around another State Emblem of the Soviet Union, with various Soviet inspector proofs overall and some flecks of green, blue, and white paint on the left side at the wrist. Metal components exhibit a blued finish overall. Standard wood buttstock and handguard. Distinctive side-folding spike bayonet. Buttstock has been duffle cut at and ahead of the rear bbl. band. Rifle is accompanied by a tag from the consignor stating that this carbine was brought back from Korea by Howard Caton. Rifle is fitted with an original canvas and leather sling. All numbers are matching and include the receiver, bolt, floorplate, and buttplate. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their original arsenal blue finish, exhibiting some areas of wear and thinning that show through to a pleasing brown patina, as well as some scattered spots of mild surface oxidation. Buttplate exhibits heavy oxidation overall. Mirror bore, exhibiting some very light pitting in the grooves and retaining well defined rifling throughout. Stock exhibits numerous scattered marks and minor impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. Leather on sling remains mostly malleable, with the front leather band having torn at one time. (23-5536/MLW). CURIO. $300-400.
