MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 11.3x51R. S# 2541. Bbl. 32 1/2". Bbl. is dated on the top left flat over chamber "1878". Bbl. has numerous acceptance and proof marks. Additionally, bbl. is marked on the left flat "2541", matching the buttplate. The receiver bolt assembly, mag. follower, and rear sight leaf are all numbered "999". These rifles were originally mfg. as single-shot, and most were later modified to accept the 4-shot Vitali mag. Along with the numbering, the receiver is marked on the left side "P. STEVENS / MAASTRICHT". Mag. cutoff is located on the left side of the receiver. Cleaning rod is present. Walnut stock with a prominent encircled "crown / W / MAASTRICHT / 1878". There is an additional acceptance cartouche. CONDITION: stock set has very good crisp markings, but with wear and numerous handling marks throughout. Notable repaired 4" chip on left side of receiver, which is open at the rear. Metal parts, originally issued bright, are now turning gray with very light scattered oxidation. Mag. has notable patina. Very good, shiny bore with sharp lands. (01-25888/RW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
