FINE ENGRAVING AND GAME SCENE BY B. BARA. Cal. 416 Rigby. S# 1701. E. Domoulin was one of the first makers to recreate the classic model 98 Mauser magnum action starting around 1986. They build a little over one hundred guns a year. Some, like this rifle, are beautifully finished and engraved. This rifle has 26" heavy weight sporter barrel fitted with one standing two folding leaf rear sight with gold lines in sleeved on island base; sleeved on sling eye and sleeved on front sight ramp holding gold bead front sight with flip over white night bead. Top of barrel is gold inlaid "Doumoulin Herstal S. A. Belgium". Caliber is in gold behind rear sight base. Belgian proofs are on left side. A2000 Dumoulin double square magnum Mauser action is fitted with engine turned bolt with turned down straight handle with knurled knob. Low profile bolt shroud is fitted with M70 type safety (right side is inlaid "S" "F" in gold). Drop box bottom metal with extended bottom tang has hinged floor plate with release button in trigger guard bow. Action, bolt shroud and bottom metal are very finely engraved, with near full coverage truly exceptional, open shaded scroll with acanthus and some floral highlights. The beauty of this engraving can not be overstated. On floorplate it surrounds oval bulino scene of Cape buffalo in open savanna is running toward viewer changing direction in mid stride. Engraver's signature "B. Bara" is in rectangular device on top of left side wall. Classically styled pistol grip stock of very finely marbled and lightly figured European walnut measures 14 7/8" over black "Decelerator" pad. Stock features steel grip cap engraved to match remainder of rifle; swept shadow line right hand cheekpiece; ebony forend tip; two engraved recoil bolts; another recoil lug on barrel bedded with screw from bottom of forend and sling eye on toeline. Closely spaced point pattern checkering with mullered borders is at grip and around forend. CONDITION: exceptionally fine, close to "as new", with only a few handling marks in all fine factory finishes; most notably a small group of three or four minor marks in front of grip checkering on right side. Bores are bright and shiny. Mechanically crisp. A beautiful classic big game rifle. (23-422/MGM). MODERN. $15,000-22,500.
