SCABBARD RETAILED IN NEW ORLEANS. This is a unique & unusual sword that appears original & authentic in every regard. Sword & scabbard are classic E. J. Johnston Macon, GA mfg. w/ squared ricasso, polished wood grip & plain pinned scabbard mounts. Stamped on ricasso is the typical “Thomas Griswold” maker’s mark in arch. E J Johnston was making swords a few months before the start of Thomas Griswold in the summer of 1861 in New Orleans. Regardless of why New Orleans marking is on Macon, GA sword- we may never know- but this is a rare, unique survivor. CONDITION: very good overall. 30” Blade overall gray w/ staining & pitting. Marking on ricasso is weak & topline but “NEW ORLEANS” is deep & crisp. Scabbard mounts & hilt has mottled dark chocolate/mustard patinas. Wood grip is sound, slightly loose w/ hand worn patina. Scabbard is heavily restored, scabbard mounts all appear original all though leather scabbard body has been rebuilt around original leather & dyed black. (02-15800/JS). $4,000-6,000.
