SABER.
This saber has a stylized eagle pommel that was popular in the early years of the United States, but was also used by many European countries. This sword is quite likely Provincial French or possibly Italian. Overall length 35 3/4". Blade length 27 3/4". Blade has a single wide fuller and a single narrow fuller near the spine. The first 1/3 of the blade is decorated with various talismans, including the sun, moon & various stars. Brass hilt with an interesting diamond shaped guard & plain knuckle bow with a single interconnecting branch. The backstrap is also plain and is topped by a well-executed eagle’s head. Grip appears to be horn but may be a rare figured wood. The wire wrapping is single strand copper. Scabbard is iron mounted black leather. CONDITION: blade shows wear to the etching and has a medium gray mottled patina. The hilt & grip are quite solid and the brass has a deep original mustard patina. Scabbard body shows flexing but is quite solid. The iron mounts have a dark oxidized patina. (02-19476/BF). $1,000-1,400.
