A classic example of a circa 1820-1840 American dragoon helmet, sometimes referred to as the jockey helmet. The helmet measures roughly 9 5/8" high & 9" in depth. It features a brass band trimmed base w/ star motif side bosses. Extending up from the right boss is a plume holder. A later red & white plume is included for display purposes. The peak in the front is also edged w/ a tapered brass band. The front of the helmet is decorated w/ a dragoon on horseback front plate. It is an exceptionally well struck example w/ intricately executed die work far more detailed than is normally seen. The leather body of the helmet is sewn at the seams w/ a sewn leather visor that has the remains of a green painted finish on the underside. Leather sweatband is intact. The interior of the helmet has the remains of a paper label that reads in part, “_ EOPLES & .B_ _ _ _NUFACTURER_”. CONDITION: front plate & brass trim share a very pleasing mustard yellow patina. Leather remains strong w/ only minimal crazing throughout. Sweatband is nearly 100% intact w/ only loss of surface finish. Plume shows light wear. A fine example of an early American mounted helmet. (02-14914/BF). $2,500-3,200.
