HOST RIFLE. Cal. 223. S# SP25383. Bbl. 20". Manufactured 1973. Barrel marked "C MP B", terminated w/ A1 flash hider. Protected post front sight / gas block / bayonet lug. Beavertail plastic handguards w/ metal liners, retained w/ strait delta ring. E1 dual aperture, windage adjustable rear sight. SP1 cut bolt carrier w/ forward assist serrations, marked "C" on left side. Bolt marked "MPC". Type 2 "Cotter", firing pin retaining pin. Standard rifle buffer. Full length, 10" rifle stock w/ trap door. No noticeable markings on upper receiver. Sling swivels front & rear. Consigner supplied the following statement regarding the role of this rifle in the inception of the MILES Laser Training System; "In 1972, The Combat Training Board hired Arthur D. Little, Inc. a Cambridge, MA (“ADL”) based technical consulting firm, to propose the application of new technologies to the army’s training program. After visiting several training bases, the ADL team which included the AR-15’s consignor and Lieutenant General James Gavin (82 Airborne retired), the team recommended the application of microcomputers and lasers as new technologies. The application proposed was the Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System, (MILES) is a laser training system that was designed to fit specific firearms in military service and emulate their performance when used in conjunction with sensors to pick up fired "shots". The system coded weapons and sensors so that heavy weapons could “damage or destroy” armored units and lighter weapons could only “wound or kill” personnel. It was designed in the late 1970's and enhanced over the years. The MILES System is still involved in infantry training today. In the early days of the system, it was introduced to the Army's Combat Arms Training Board as a mockup, utilizing this rifle and the attached accessories. It was photographed for the final report by the consignor in 1973". MAGS: 2 aluminum 20 rd w/ Adventureline" floorplates. CONDITION: Finish is complete & consistent w/ only a few light handling marks & some small areas of glue residue from training accessories. Bright bore w/ strong rifling.
