REVOLVER. Cal. 357 Mag. S# 47441. (Reg. # 880). Bbl. 6 1/2" with Call brass bead. One of 5 identical revolvers shipped to Von Lengerke & Antione of Chicago, IL on March 23, 1936; billed at wholesale price of $35.45 each. Early blued prewar example with logo on left side of frame. Matching numbered barrel, cylinder and extractor. Assembly numbered 4866 plus registration number 880. This model is the first of Magnum revolvers that was influenced by Elmer Keith; first example given to J. Edgar Hoover (Reg. # 1) and popular with other famous persons such as General Patton (Reg. # 506). Offered in many barrel lengths and with various features; each almost a custom build from S&W. Only 5224 Magnums were "Registered" 1935-1939 evolving into the Model 27 of the present. Hidden special feature is spring loaded detent to assist keeping cylinder fully open for loading and ejecting. Proper diamond center checkered Magna grips (non-matching; 43445 stamped) with early in the white machined locating disks that are not patent marked. Case colored .265" grooved trigger and standard checkered hammer. Finely checkered top strap and barrel rib. Smooth finished pre Micrometer adjustable sight has square notch sighted for 25 yards using Magnum ammo with 6 o'clock hold. Both grip straps are grooved; deluxe added feature for the model as other S&W revolvers were plain. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: April 30, 2021 S&W research letter signed by Historian Roy Jinks supporting above info. CONDITION: near excellent appearance of factory quality refinish with very faint areas of finish loss to include at edges of muzzle and beginning cylinder turn line. Near excellent appearing grips with very small mark on center diamond of left. Mainspring has polished appearance; hammer tension appears lighter than normal. Very good to excellent case colors with light rub marks from frame. Near excellent bore, chambers and timing. PROVENANCE: From the Estate of Jon Thomas. (23-1624/NW). CURIO. $4,000-6,000.
