This early European sword blade was produced in France, but the hilt may be of English or Scottish manufacture. The sword measures 26 1/2" overall with an 18 3/4" blade that is 2 3/8" wide. The blade is engraved with a swag around an urn medallion at the base of both sides. The spine of the blade has a difficult to read inscription but appears to say "Devaux Sourbiseur De L'Ecole Royale militaire Place Des Trois mairis au Dieu mad a Paris". Iron basket hilt resembling period English and Scottish broadsword hilts. The globular pommel is also reminiscent of a broadsword pommel. The tapered rectangular grip is first wrapped in leather and then braided brass wire. CONDITION: blade has medium gray, lightly mottled patina. The guard and pommel have a medium gray patina. Grip is complete though worn. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (02-24708/BF). NON-GUN. $1,000-2,000.
