WHEELER & SONS. Cal. 60. NSN. Robert Wheeler had a contract with the British board of ordnance and delivered 1,491 Indian trade guns to the British to be distributed during the War of 1812. This gun has 36 1/2" octagon to round barrel with Birmingham proofs at breech end. Top flat is stamped with fox head within a circle and "LONDON". A crowned "14" is at rear of barrel tang. Lock with rounded plate having slight arch is fitted with serpentine cock, inset rounded pan, unbridled frizzen and feather spring with dog nose finial. Fox head in circle is at center and tail is marked "WHEELER" "&" "SONS". Trigger is of medium size and trigger guard has deeply curved bow. Walnut stock with handrail comb has well shaped beavertail molding around barrel tang. Brass buttplate is nailed to stock and a classic coiled sea monster brass sideplate is affixed with three large screws. Stock extends to muzzle and is pinned to barrel. A steel ramrod is held by two multi ring brass pipes and hole as thimble. CONDITION: good. Barrel and lock retaining smooth dark brown patina with some vice marks on barrel. Stock with old oil finish has had comb drastically lowered but is otherwise fine. The is a tack repair at top front of lock. Bore is lightly pitted. Lock is very stiff but appears to be operable. Frizzen has been resteeled and bottom portion of steel broken out. A historically important gun. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (01-22564/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
