Overall length: 30". Blade length: 24 3/4". Plain blade w/ single central fuller extending 7 1/2" up from the hilt. There is a stylized "S" stamped centrally on both sides of the blade. Typical iron katzbalger S shaped iron guard w/ lobed terminals on both sides. Iron pommel. Carved wood grip w/ 2 raised rings is likely oak. No scabbard. The katzbalger was worn as a side arm usually by archers, crossbowmen & occasionally pikemen. Designed as a cutting & hacking sword that could also be used for thrusting if necessary. CONDITION: blade has a cleaned gray finish w/ evidence of light pitting. The edge has several sm. nicks. Guard is undamaged. Pommel is solid. Grip has a wonderful ancient patina w/ 2 chips missing just under the pommel. (02-13374 /BF). $1,000-1,500.
