WOOD & IRON SPANNER. 1) Mostly iron & steel, stone bow measures 25" overall & w/ 16" hand forged bow. Drawing & cocking mechanism is retained in cocked position by pivoting latch at rear. Trigger mechanism is in rear housing. Metal parts have some file decoration & there is a maker’s stamp of a prancing deer in front of cocking lever handle. Black painted rectangular wood stock has some incised carving on sides & cheekpiece. 2) Spanner for undetermined use (possibly for tightening ropes) is hand forged & handle is of shaped & turned oak. One side is carved “1703” & bottom w/ conjoined initials “AL” & w/ monogram “SM” (?) w/ top portion in the shape of a heart. CONDITION: stone bow appears complete except for string, w/ old black paint overall. Spanner has iron parts, considerably rusted. Wood w/ worm damage through old finish. (02-15325/MGM). $800-1,200.
