Cal. 12 Ga. 2-1/2" Rifle Cal. 32-40. S# 16. The Hollenbeck Gun Co. began production around 1901 and the action patent date is February 13, 1900. This combination gun is S# 16, undoubtedly made during the first year of production. It has 28" damascus shotgun barrels of very high quality American Flag or "Stars and Stripes" pattern. Rifle barrel is steel. Matted top rib holds interesting multi-position "V" notch rear sight which folds almost flat for shotgun use. Front sight is a blade type with a silver bead. Root of rear rib extension is engraved "DAMASCUS STEEL". Large barrel lump contains unusual cocking mechanism with rollers that engage cocking arms in boxlock lock type action. Case hardened action features automatic safety and double triggers. Rifle cocking lever with half cock notch, is in front of elongated trigger guard bow. Action and barrels are engraved in what appears to be Grade 2 style with varying size scroll within geometric borders surrounding oval dog scenes on sides: setter on left, pointing pointer on right. There is some engraving on barrels. Trigger plate is engraved "Hollenbeck Gun Co" "Wheeling, W. VA." Two birds are on trigger guard bow; S# is on tang. Buttstock with pistol grip having cyma curve bottom with inlet ebony accent measures 14-1/4" over hard rubber Hollenbeck Gun Co. buttplate. Stock is of very nicely streaked and lightly fiddle figured European walnut. Very well cut borderless point pattern checkering is on semi-diamond grip. Matching forend with steel tip has checkering with rounded outlines to pattern and unique Hollenbeck release with push forward release button in shaped escutcheon. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .730. R .730. Restriction: L .035 (full). R .037 (full). Wall thickness: L .032. R .027. STOCK: DAH: 2-7/8". DAC: 1-9/16". CAST: neutral. LOP: 14-1/4". WEIGHT: 8 lb. 2 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun comes with green canvas case with leather trim; lined in green felt. CONDITION: very fine. Barrels retaining most of their original brown with very fine definition to spectacular damascus pattern. Action retains a large amount of its case hardening color which is quite strong where protected and fades to mottled gray at carrying points. Stocks retain nearly all of their original oil finish with some scattered handling marks. Bores are bright and shiny throughout. Action is tight; barrels are on face; mechanically fine. A very fine example of this important American drilling. Over the years the same gun was made by Hollenbeck with a change of name to Three Barrel Gun Co. around 1905 and to Royal Gun Co. around 1910. (23-997/MGM). CURIO. $2,500-3,500.
