CONTRACT MUSKET BY M. T. WICKHAM. Cal. 69. NSN. M. T. Wickham had a contract for almost 20,000 muskets between 1822-37. This musket has 42" bbl. w/ "US", "P", & "F" proofs on breech end. Lock w/ inset brass pan has flat faced serpentine cock, bridled frizzen, featherspring w/ bulbous finial. In front of cock, lock is stamped "M. T. Wickham" in arch over "Philla". Internal inspection reveals matching maker's marks on bridle & pan. American walnut stock is held to bbl. w/ 3 spring retained bands & is iron mounted. There are no noted inspector's marks. Sling loops & trumpet head iron ramrod are present. CONDITION: fair to good. Metal parts w/ old cleaning & scattered overall pitting have toned back to light brown & gray. Stock w/ old cleaning & sanding marks has old oil refinish. Dusty, rusty bore. Lock will not hold at full cock. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19654/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,800.
