DECOY. Mallard drake decoy crafted by R. Madison Mitchell in 1928 in Havre de Grace, MD. Research indicates that Mitchell started his decoy carving career in 1926, this example being appearing to have been made just two years later. The decoy measures approx. 17", and features brown, white, gray, green, and black plumage, with a yellow beak and painted yellow eyes. Underside of decoy is marked with an apparent "3" on the left side of the lead ballast weight and steel anchor ring, with faintly etched text on the right appearing to read "R. Madison Mitchell/ Havre de grade md/ 1928" (much of the text is rather crudely etched, with some characters possibly being misinterpreted). CONDITION: decoy retains the majority of its apparent original painted exterior, showing some superficial handling marks, some small spots of wear (most notably along edges of bill and tail), as well as some scattered cracking. Upper left side of decoy exhibits a notable impression. Mitchell enjoyed a long career, having crafted decoys from 1926-1984, making this a notably early example of his work. (02-25973/MLW). NON-GUN. $300-400.
