"WHIPIT" GUN WITH POLICE PROPERTY TAG. Cal. 20 Ga. S# 43917. Bbl. 15.25". A unique, original Remington Model 17 shotgun in the "Whipit" configuration. First introduced in 1917, it was early 1921 before it started being shipped from regular production. They almost immediately started manufacturing a Riot Gun variation, designated as the Model 17R w/ a 20" barrel. After a short time where it did not accumulate significant sales, another variation was conceived, designated as the Model 17 Special Police Gun. While they continued w/ the original 20 Ga. chambering, the 20" barrel was swapped out for a 15.1" barrel, and the full length shoulder stock was replaced w/ a pistol grip only. It was nicknamed "The Whipit" and it was marketed to law enforcement for use in tight spaces such as hallways & stairwells. It was popular for both right-hand & left-had shooters due to its ejection path being strait down. This example has a matching serial numbered barrel and appears to have a manufacture date of March, 1927. It has a Milwaukee Police Department sticker on the left side of the receiver. 1.25" silver sticker marked: PROPERTY OF MILW. POLICE DEPT." w/ property number "13128" above ejection port. Blued finish on exposed metal surfaces. Flat brass bead front sight. Hardwood smooth pistol grip w/ serrated pump action forend. Left side of receiver marked: "REMINGTON / MODEL 17 / 43917". Left side of barrel marked: "43917 / CYL L / AU". CONDITION: finish is thinned on barrel & receiver w/ a gentle patina visible under close inspection. Magazine thinning is more obvious due to the mechanical intervention. Bore is shiny & bright. Fire control mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand and remains quite smooth. NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT SHORT BARRELED SHOTGUN REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. (03-2030/JZ). CURIO CLASS III. $600-1,200.
