(ANCESTOR OF SENATOR MARGARET CHASE SMITH), SILHOUETTE CUT BY JAMES HOSLEY WHITCOMB OF N.H. Includes an early 19th century sampler with decorative floral vine border centering eleven alpha numeric rows below which is embroidered "Wrought by Rebecca H Hixon Age 8". The sampler is accompanied by a wonderful silhouette identifying Rebecca H. Hixon. Silhouette with inked lace collar. The silhouette was cut by James Hosley Whitcomb of New Hampshire; he was a deaf artist in the early 19th century with a distinctive style. His works are reasonably scarce and sought after by collectors. Information from a family descendent indicated in 1978 some family history which includes Rebecca Hixon's relation to one of the most famous female legislators ever in the history of our country; Mrs. Margaret Chase Smith of Skowhegan, Maine. SIZE: Sampler Sight is 17" x 13". Overall 18" x 14". Silhouette Sight is 5" x 3 3/4". Overall 7" x 5 1/2" in a mahogany veneer period frame. CONDITION: sampler is very good retaining much of its original color. Silhouette is very good. (05-217/JJ). $1,000-2,000.
