Cal. 8x57 (8mm Mauser). S# 8485f. Bbl. 23 1/2". Blade front sight with protective hood. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2000. Receiver top marked "byf 41," denoting mfg. by Mauser Oberndorf in 1941. Radom-made bayonet lug and cleaning rod are both unnumbered, but all other visible numbered parts are matching, with the stock number being faint. Many parts bear the correct Mauser Oberndorf "WaA655" Waffenamts. Blued finish. Walnut stock set with left side sling swivels and period K98k style sling. Right side of the stock has two faint eagle "WaA655" Waffenamts and eagle "Heer" marking. Sling cut has altered appearance on right side. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: fnj43-coded S84/98 bayonet with matching-numbered scabbard in good condition with areas turning gray, some pitting, oxidation, and a notable scabbard dent. CONDITION: sanded stock set has some chipping on the right side of the recoil bolt, a 1" crack above the bandkeeper, some gashes on top of the wrist, a couple further chips, scattered dings, and handling marks. Metal retains 30% of its blue, showing perhaps some touch-up blue on the front end, with overall fading to gray, some dings, and scattered oxidation. Action functions properly when hand-cycled. Fair bore with scattered frosting and oxidation. PROVENANCE: from the estate collection of Charles Wagner. (24-4619/MJC). CURIO. $1,000-1,500.
